Car Trouble

It’s the time of year when many people go on holiday which often involves a lengthy car journey.  Which is fine if your car is working properly. My wife’s car is showing its age.  It no longer passes the MOT 1st time. The interior is looking like you would expect a 15 year old family car to look.  The body work is past its best and now the engine has developed a fault.  It’s one of those really frustrating electronic faults that could be caused by any number of things.  Some days it runs OK, on others it’s a bit more hit and miss.

Will it start?  Will it keep going?  Will it break down – and if it does how far from home will it be, and will it be in an inconvenient place.

Our bodies can be like cars in that respect.  As time goes on they show signs of ageing.  Some parts don’t work as well as they used to and the ‘bodywork’ might not look the same as it did a few years ago!

Like cars, we also need looking after.  Some of that we can do ourselves in the way of being careful what we eat and getting enough exercise and sleep.  But on other occasions we need the help of others: doctors, nurses, home care assistants, to name just a few. But the professionals aren’t all that is needed. Sometimes people get lonely – which can also affect their health.

What can we do to help?  Jesus once said, “whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.”  In other words, when we help others, it is as if we are serving Jesus himself.  Whether we live in an urban or rural location, the chances are that there is someone nearby who would appreciate a knock on the door.

It may require a degree of sacrifice – especially in regards to time, but popping in to see someone on a regular basis can make the world of difference – especially if they cannot get out very much.

As our cars get older, they need more attention – not less.  Are we so very different?
