Holidays

Have you booked your holidays for this year yet?  For some people, it’s what they do every January once the Christmas and New Year festivities are over.   For others it’s more of a spur of the moment decision just before they travel. Some people simply can’t afford holidays.

Of course the origin of ‘holiday’ was ‘holy day’.  The intention of a holy day was typically to allow people to tend to religious duties associated with important dates on the calendar. So there was originally a religious reason for taking time out from regular work to do something else.

As I write this article, I am about to embark on a trip to Israel, to the Holy Land.  I will be a ‘tourist’ in many respects, I will also be a pilgrim – visiting sites of importance to the Christian faith.  I am hoping to take lots of great photos of famous places I have heard about, but not yet been to.  But I am also hoping for some ‘holy moments’ - opportunities to pause and reflect at certain locations, to revisit in my mind many of the Gospel stories of our Lord.

I’ve been told that standing in the places where Jesus stood can be a very moving experience and helps to bring the gospel stories alive.  But as far as I’m concerned, the gospel of Jesus is already alive – it has already moved me to put my faith in Him.  It lives in me and countless other Christians today. It is not just history, archaeology or sites of interest.  It’ll be interesting to see what effect, physically being in those places mentioned in the Bible, has on my faith.

Whilst it’s not technically a holiday (I know some would debate that!), I am hoping that it will very much be filled with ‘holy days’ as I walk the paths and streets that Jesus trod. I’m hoping the experience will enrich my understand of the Gospel, and deepen my faith. I’ll let you know how I fared next month.

Rev Phil Michell.
