A Wish – or a Prayer

Happy New Year!!  How many times have you heard, read or said that phrase over the last couple of weeks?  We lump it in with our Christmas greetings and we even sing about the two together as well: “We wish you a merry Christmas – and a happy New Year” - along with the demand for figgy pudding (has anyone ever tried it?). We all want to be happy don’t we?  Perhaps that’s why so many thousands of people flock to see stand up comedians in huge arenas. They want to laugh, they want to be happy.

So what will this year bring? What hopes and dreams do you have? Or are you expecting more of the same?

It would be nice if we could guarantee happiness to the people we say “happy new year” to wouldn’t it. But we can’t can we? We don’t know what the next 12 months will hold for us. There may be lots of happy times – or they might be few and far between.

So how can we make ‘happy new year’ more meaningful, rather than it being an optimistic wish? You may have several ideas – but how about this one...

Consider how we can serve those in our communities. What are the needs, in what areas do people need help, who are the vulnerable, who might be lonely, which groups are under resourced, who feels left out and not cared for?  The questions could go on and on – but that also means there are many possibilities and opportunities to get involved and make a difference.

Many are already involved in community activities, charities and visiting friends. It makes such a difference when people reach out to others.  I know of someone who really appreciates children waving to them as they make their way to school. It’s very simple, but it brightens their day and makes a difference.

Throughout his ministry, Jesus touched the untouchables, he accepted the outcast, he turned lives around, he brought people back to God.

May our ‘happy new year’ not just be an empty wish, but may it become our prayer for those around us. And you never know – God might answer that prayer through us as we reach out to those in need.

“Happy New Year”
