Reader's Ramblings  -  From Jigsaws to Spirituality

Last Christmas we received a jig-saw puzzle. Now the Christmas holiday is a time when I allow myself time to make a jigsaw without feeling that I should be engaged in something more profitable. This time I have reflected on some of the processes involved.

After an initial look at the picture on the box lid our strategy is to find edge pieces and make the frame with no further references to the picture on the box. Infilling often produces little collections of pieces of similar colour and brush stroke to help build up areas of different subject matter. Gradually these then start to connect together. Throughout the whole process there are always a few pieces that do not look as though they can possibly fit anywhere, or holes that look as though they will never be filled, but the final moment of glory comes when the last piece is slotted in and the entire picture is revealed as an entity.

The building up of a Christian community might be thought about as having a similar process. Perhaps considering it akin to the work of God in creativity and ourselves finding our own place in it. Each person has a unique slot, something that God has created us to be or to do. The question for us is, "How do we recognise who we are and where we should be?"

In a Christian context we can be helped when we keep a focus on God as he reveals himself to us. This may happen through prayer and reflection, Bible reading and worship, by keeping Jesus as our friend and guide and by being alert to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. This can help us to identify our own strengths and characteristics to see where we might uniquely need to be.

This year the beginning of Lent falls in the third week of February. Lent is traditionally a time to focus on spiritual growth or on deepening our meeting with God and our relationship with God. This in turn may show itself in a greater awareness of the world around us and in ways of giving support and value. In Lent there will be opportunities within our benefice and beyond to make this focus. Maybe thus we will find anew, like pieces in a jig-saw, our own place in God's creativity.
