A Time to Remember

"Remember remember the fifth of November!"

"At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them."

Those are two very well known phrases that are used in the month of November.  The first one is reminding us not to forget the gunpowder plot of 1605 when Guy Fawkes (and others) attempted to blow up parliament and everyone in it.

The second phrase is used on Remembrance Sunday when, as a nation, we gather to remember those who gave their lives in the two world wars.

Both of those events remind us of the violence that human beings are capable of inflicting on one another.  The irony of the first phrase, is that it is the first line of a poem from the 19th century, in which the writer also says this: "A rope, a rope to hang the pope"!  So on the one hand we are encouraged to remember the foiling of a plot to blow up parliament, and yet the writer is also encouraging violence to be done against someone else.

During August many people from across the Benefice commemorated the start of WW1 - in a variety of ways.  They were moving and poignant occasions.  The Tower of London is being transformed by a sea of ceramic poppies, representing those who lost their lives in WW1.  Many who have visited and seen the display are shocked by the sheer numbers involved.  On Remembrance Sunday (10.30am service at Kniveton this year, and 12.15pm at Hognaston) and on Remembrance day, we have the opportunity to remember those whose lives were sacrificed on behalf of others, who brought freedom and peace to those held captive.

We might look at the world today and ask "what have we learned?" when we see so many countries being ripped apart by conflict.  We might not be able to do much on a global scale, but how might we live peaceably with those around us?
