Harvest – A Time to Reap

September is a busy month!  Many are returning from holidays, schools open their doors to their pupils for another year of academic studies and many farmers are trying (weather permitting) to harvest ripened crops.  After the summer break, it’s full steam ahead on many fronts.

Our churches will be celebrating harvest in their usual ways with services, suppers, auctions and donations of food or money to local organisations and charities.  For many of us, harvest is just a festival, a time to remember God’s provision and to be thankful, both to Him and to those who produce all that we consume.  We spend a few days focussing on this area of life, and it’s right that we do so.  These are great opportunities for bringing our communities together.

For others in rural Derbyshire it is a way of life – 24/7!  And, depending on what kind of farming they are involved in, their harvest isn’t just during August, September and October.  For example dairy farmers harvest twice a day, every day. Those who run kitchen gardens harvest according to what is growing at different times of the year.  Many farmers have just a narrow window of opportunity to get their harvest in.  With advances in machinery, it is not so much a case of having enough workers, but having to deal with the vagaries of the British weather!

Jesus once said, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”  When it come to the Gospel, there is a harvest waiting to be reaped, there are people waiting to be told the good news of Jesus Christ.  We don’t have machines to do it – instead, God relies on people to bring the harvest in.

As we make preparations to celebrate our harvest festivals, as we give thanks for the food that we have, let us also consider the spiritual harvest that is waiting to be brought in.
