Time Out to Take Stock

I wonder what people think as they drive through the villages in our area? Some might see them as idyllic, sleepy places, the perfect location to get away from it all.  Others will be so busy or distracted, focussed on getting to where they want to be that they won’t even notice the beauty of the surroundings they are passing through.

For those who live here – it can be a similar experience:  for some, life is idyllic and they feel free from the stresses of everyday life.  For many, if not most, life is hectic, busy, full of things to do and challenges to be tackled.  When life is busy, how often do we make the effort to stand still, look around and enjoy our surroundings and those close to us?

It’s important in life to have those moments when we press the pause button.  Jesus would often take himself off to a quiet place to think and to pray.  He needed time away from all the demands that people placed on him.

As a group of five churches, we too will be taking time out to pause and reflect.  On June 28th we are having a Benefice away day where all members of our churches are invited to take a day out to think about where we are at the moment – and to look ahead to where we want to be.  That will involve thinking about our communities and the ways in which we can serve them.

Pausing, taking time to take stock isn’t always easy – particularly if there 101 other things you could be getting on with.  But it is a discipline which can bear much fruit, and can in fact save you time and effort in the long run.

I once travelled on the back of a friend’s motorcycle from Baslow to Scarborough. Not long into the journey we sensed we were going in the wrong direction – but my friend continued to ride for several miles until we eventually pulled into a service station.  We checked the map and then realised we had indeed gone the wrong way.  If we’d stopped to check our direction earlier – we would have got to our destination a lot sooner!
