Pilgrims or Tourists

The Holy Land is an amazing place and going on pilgrimage there is an experience I will never forget.  The sights – from the golden Dome on the Rock to the barren landscape of the Sinai desert.  The sounds – from the Muslim call to prayer that sounded out from various minarets across Jerusalem, to the sound of 40 people singing in harmony in churches with beautiful acoustics.  The smells – from the smells of cooking coming from the ‘Souks’ in the old part of Jerusalem to the fragrant aroma emanating from the slab that Jesus was allegedly laid out on following his death.

All those things – and more contributed to making the trip a very special one.  But I will admit that there were times when I felt more like a tourist than a pilgrim.  I enjoy photography and so I was determined to get lots of shots of the places we visited and I’ll admit that sometimes the photo opportunities took precedence over the history of the events of place being visited.  Occasionally I had to make a conscious decision to turn the camera off and focus on the importance of the place I was in.  On one particular occasion I even decided to leave the camera at the hotel so as not to be distracted by looking for a good viewpoint.

As we begin lent, it is also an opportunity to put away the things which distract us from our faith.  Lent is an opportunity to focus on what really matters – the passion of our Lord Jesus Christ - and to give the Easter story the time and energy it deserves.

The most moving part of my pilgrimage happened when my camera was not only off, but left behind.  What will help you, this lent, to make the most of the run up to Easter?

So, are we going to be tourists this Easter – or pilgrims?

Rev Phil Michell.
