Reader's Ramblings

"What does God do in his spare time?" - this was a question raised during a recent school service and it made me smile, then it made me think about how children see God. The following piece of writing is by Jas, who's 10:

My Thoughts about God

God is an affable man, he cherishes every second, he loves every being- whether it's an ant , sheep or woman; it doesn't matter to him how look on the outside, but he cares whether you are beautiful on the inside. He guides us through the darkness when there appears to be no light - he listens.....God always finds a way, even when it is difficult, he will always find a way. God watches us, he watches our success and our failures, but if we pray -if we apologise- we will be forgiven.

God is extremely merciful and forgives, but he doesn't forget; he can't be bribed and he loves to love. He is selfless and only cares for other people. If you are lonely God will always listen to your every word that happens to tumble out of your dry, crumbling lips; he provides hope and courage to carry on.

We carry on through the solitary desert- we follow his huge footprints that lead us in the right direction. Everything he touches blossoms with the most amazing colours; red, yellow, sea blues and grass greens- they all sprang into this, once desolate, but  world. He is the author of our future and packs our lives full of events, whether it's exciting, scary, sickening, painful or wonderful.

Wonderful. As God's great, booming voice echoes into the atmosphere, the hills and valleys sing for joy.

Joyfully, God helps the needy and cares for everyone. God is awe inspiring. God is a great man and I think he is amazing.

From reading this, I would say God doesn't have any spare time as all of the above would keep him busy 24/7.

From the thoughts of younger children to the reasoning of teenagers - the following is an extract from this year's RE GCSE exam:

1. Explain the Design (teleological) argument for the existence of God. - 5 marks 2. "Nature reveals the power of God". What do you think? Explain your opinion- 3 marks

Thoughts about God have moved on quite a lot since primary stage and it's good that we should teach children to reason and rationalise and RE is an excellent medium in which to do this but I can't help but think that some of the originality, spontaneity and sheer wonder disappears in the process. What, I wonder, would they make of miracles?
